You will also find some pieces of jewellery with Keshi pearls in our range. Keshi pearls are actually an accidental by-product of pearl farming. They were created in the 1907s when more and more Japanese cultivators found these small by-products in their shells. Unlike pearls, they grow without being encased by a foreign body and therefore consist of 100 % mother-of-pearl. This creates a very special surface that shimmers and shines wonderfully. Other characteristics of the Keshi pearl are that it is generally rather small and, as it grows without a shape-defining centre, it occurs in different shapes. This unusual pearl can grow in both fresh and salt water. The name Keshi means ‘small particle’ or ‘poppy seed’ in Japanese, which is why they are also known as poppy seed pearls.
